A small but developing township located approximately 58 kilometres southwest of Melbourne is historic Lara. Initially, Lara came about in the 1850s after the railway line between Melbourne and Geelong was constructed, and was called Kennedy’s Creek. However, some other names were bandied about at the time, including Hovels Creek, Cheddar, Swindon, Duck Ponds, and Lara Lake.
Hume and Hovell arrived to explore Lara in 1824. Thinking they had reached Westernport Bay, they encountered Aboriginals who called the land ‘Corago,’ and the bay as ‘Jullong.’ This brought on the suggestion that Corio and Geelong were named.
By the 1890s, the population had developed into the hundreds with churches and schools built to deal with the needs of the community. Town water was provided in 1947.
Vicious bushfires in 1969 destroyed many homes, a school and church, and unfortunately 17 people lost their lives.
At present Lara has a population of just over 15,500 residents, and is located in the region of the City of Greater Geelong. Noted as a suburb of Geelong, Melbourne, the median age of the population is 36 years of age, which is one year below the Australian average.
Lara has 81.4% of the population Australian-born, with 4.5% coming from England, 1.4% from Philippines, 0.9% from Scotland, 0.9% from Netherlands, and New Zealand having 0.8%. Languages spoken consist of English at 85.7%, Italian at 0.7%, Tagalog 0.7%, Croatian 0.6%, Filipino 0.6%, and Vietnamese at 0.4%.
The 1979 feature film ‘Mad Max’ was shot on location around Lara as well as other ABC films.
Lara has Hovell’s Creek running through the town, ending at the small inlet of Corio Bay, Limeburners Bay. This creek however, lacks useful water because of the low run-off factors and poor soils along the surrounding region. The You Yangs granite peaks can be seen from many areas of Geelong, rising vividly to a height of 352 metres.
The outskirts of Lara contain several prisons, including HM Prison Barwon, which is a maximum security structure opened in 1990, and a medium security Marngoneet Correctional Centre which opened in 2006. A female juvenile detention centre, the Pirra Girls’ Home, closed down in the 1980s.
St Laurence Park is a housing estate in Lara with 86 fully self-contained cottages and 22 flats available as an old-age facility. Also on the outskirts of Lara is the Ford Motor Company of Australia’s proving grounds for automotive evaluating and testing. Lara is also home to the Avalon College, preparing International students for traditional schools.
